Exponential writer of the Bessarabian eighties, Nicolae Popa is as good in poetry as he is memorable in novels and short prose. He is one of the reference prose writers of contemporary Romanian literature from the Bessarabian area of Romanian letters. He is not, as others might expect, a prose poet, but a harsh, relentless and captivating narrator of stories that hold your breath. He is an accomplished novelist and instrumentalist, with the gift of storytelling and the amazing ability to create memorable entourages and characters. The critic Eugen Lungu, who signs the afterword of the book, puts Popa's first short stories under the sign of the forest (the author was born in a village in Bessarabian Codrii), and the last ones under the sign of water: "If Nicolae Popa's first books rhymed with the green rustling conquering from a predominantly forest area, then the volumes of prose seem conceived under the aquatic empire." And a clarification, necessary in the narrative context: "The waters in N. Popa's short prose (but also in novels!) are more than an ambient entourage or a simple background on which the characters' existential trajectory is projected. The liquid environment (rivers, lakes, ponds, canals, etc.) is usually a quasi-fantastic realm consubstantial with human experiences. The dilemmas of the characters, perceived by them sometimes only at an instinctual level, find an unexpected awareness only through strange reflections in the mirror of the waters".
The book includes the author's reference short stories and is primarily addressed to literary gourmands, those who know how to appreciate refined and dense writing, but also to all lovers of narrative prose of small proportions.
